WHAT IS REAR DIFFERENTIAL SERVICE?
A properly working rear differential in a vehicle is a must for safety reasons. The rear differential distributes your engine's power to the wheels to allow them to turn at different speeds. When you turn your vehicle, the inside wheel turns slower than the outside wheel so you can execute a smooth turn. If this was not the case and all your wheels turned at the same speed, it would put undue pressure on your vehicle. The rear differential also reduces the speed of the ring gear before the power gets relayed to the axles and this increases torque on that inner wheel. All wheel drive vehicles have a front and rear differentials to control the speed on all four wheels when turning.

WHY SHOULD I HAVE REAR DIFFERENTIAL SERVICE
There are several signs to watch out for if your rear differential is starting to fail. If you notice damages to the sidewalls as well as the outer tread on your tires, you may have a failing rear differential. This is due to the wheels spinning at speeds that cause damages to your tires while you are turning. Your vehicle may be hard to handle when you are turning or the drive shaft can begin to vibrate if the universal joints in the rear differential are worn. The most common sound of a failing differential is a whining noise that is caused by the lack of differential fluid due to it leaking out. If you see a red fluid in your driveway, garage or in a parking lot under your vehicle's rear end--it is leaking fluid.

If you notice any signs of a rear differential starting to fail you should have your vehicle serviced right away. Any problems it has when you first notice it will only get progressively worse over time if you ignore it. If it completely fails while you are executing a corner, it can lead to a serious accident because you won't be able to control your vehicle at all. If you see the fluid leaking and catch it quick enough, it's possible just to have the leak fixed for your repairs.
