Blue Star Service Dogs

Serivce Dogs

When soldiers come home, they can often have difficulties readjusting to life back home. To help provide veterans with the love and support they need, Blue Star Service Dogs is dedicated to pairing up veterans with dogs that care for them.

To learn more about how Blue Start Service Dogs helps veterans and dogs alike, just let us tell you all about what this organization does every day.

How Did Blue Star Service Dogs Get Started?

Service Dogs

In 2010, this organization began work in training service dogs to bond with veterans with PTSD to help them transition back to civilian life. In 2019, the organization named itself Blue Star Service Dogs.

Research has shown that service dogs can help reduce the symptoms of anxiety and depression by up to 82%. By providing veterans with service dogs specifically trained in acting appropriately around a veteran suffering from PTSD, they can find a path towards better mental health.

Available Programs

There are many ways that Blue Start Service Dogs works to train dogs for life with a veteran. For instance, the organization offers two prison training programs called the STAR training programs. This program pulls dogs from several different shelters and places them into a prison training program that prepares them for life with a veteran. In this process, people currently serving time in prison also gain skills that will help them re-integrate post release.

If a veteran has their own dog they’d like to train in the program, they also offer a Bring Your Own Dog program. Trainers will evaluate the dog to determine if they’re a good fit as a service dog. The main criteria they look for in a good service dog are:

  • Completed basic obedience classes/training
  • Spayed/neutered
  • Veterinarian certification of health and up to date on vaccines and preventatives
  • No history of aggression

Can I Help Blue Star Service Dogs?

Service Dog Training

If you’d like to lend a hand to this organization there are plenty of ways you can do it. This group is always in need of funding for their training programs, and you can donate to them to ensure they can help as many people as possible.

People looking to take on a more hands-on approach may want to consider volunteering for this group. There are plenty of volunteer opportunities for people looking to help out at the training center.
