Local Spotlight: Gleaners

Food Bank

Nutrition is something that we learn about at a very young age, but as we grow and age, it can fall to the wayside. Sometimes it’s due to circumstances out of our control, which can lead to lifelong problems. Gleaners Community Food Bank was founded to ensure that no neighbor goes unfed or unnourished. See how they’re working to create a hunger-free community in southeast Michigan!

Gleaners: Where It All Began

Since he was born, Gene Gonya has been passionate about serving his community. In 1977, his passion materialized into the Gleaners Community Food Bank. Originally, this organization lived in a rented warehouse where surplus foods were collected, safely stored, and distributed to those in need.

At its core, Gleaners is still striving for the same goal more than forty years down the road. However, their passion for bettering the greater good of the community has attracted many like-minded individuals, creating exponential growth within the organization and the impact that they have on the community.

Continuing the Legacy of Neighborly Love

Food Volunteer Today, Gleaners works diligently to feed as many people as they can by collecting food donations and making food purchases from monetary donations. These food goods are then distributed through one of their many distribution centers where volunteers pack and ship food all over the state.

While good, old-fashioned food drives are extremely lucrative to their overall mission, Gleaners uses a variety of channels to collect and distribute food to those in need. They partner with a variety of agencies to spread the movement far and wide.

In fact, they’re currently developing cloud-based service insights software that will collect data on hunger in southeast Michigan. Using the data collected by Link2Feed, agencies throughout the state can better understand supply and demand to better serve those in need.

They’re also a big proponent of hunger and malnutrition education, which is why one of their largest facets as an organization is building awareness through campaigns like the M.I.L.K. Movement. This movement is about Making Investments in the Lives of Kids by providing nutritious food and comprehensive information about health and longevity.
