Local Spotlight: The Center for Michigan
The Center for Michigan has been working for over 15 years to create a better living and working environment for people in the state. In this local spotlight, we’d like to highlight the important work this organization is doing to make Michigan a better state as a whole by engaging each and every small community.
What is The Center for Michigan?
The Center for Michigan is a self-proclaimed “think-and-do” tank that focuses on nonpartisan work throughout the state of Michigan. This nonprofit organization was founded by Phil Power, a former newspaper publisher and University of Michigan Regent, in 2006 with the mission of making Michigan a better place.
The Center for Michigan team strives to create widespread understanding and compassion within Michigan’s communities, starting with the root policies that affect the state. In addition to their involvement in policy creation, they also work directly with Michigan communities to make their voices and their concerns heard.
Community Engagement: Bridge Magazine
The Center for Michigan engages citizens on a small scale with intimate town hall meetings called “Community Conversations.” They also engage the Michigan community as a whole through Bridge Magazine, an online based news organization founded on “honest, fact-driven journalism.”
The Center for Michigan believes that change starts with knowledge, which is why Bridge Magazine plays such a vital role in their mission to make Michigan a better place to live. They cover a variety of topics including the issues that impact daily life within the state, including Michigan government, education, urban affairs, business, and quality of life.
